Damage cost is rechargeable.
Regardless of your agreement, every driver should know:
- The legal limit for tyres is 1.6mm across the central three quarters of each tyre, replace them before this limit to avoid fines or penalty points.
- Tyres must be replaced with the same specification of tyre; to find out check the side of your tyres and you should see a code there that tells you the width, profile, size, load index and speed rating. It should look something like 205/55 R17 96W.
- The brand of tyre doesn't need to be the same.
Looking after your tyres
- Pressure
Try to check your tyre pressures when they’re cold at least once a month. You can do this using a pressure gauge or at a service station. The correct inflation can normally be found inside your car or van door or inside the fuel opening. If you have a tyre pressure monitoring system in your car or van and it goes off, please don’t ignore it, as underinflated tyres have reduced grip and can cause blowouts.
- Tread
When you check pressure, it’s worth checking tread as well. The legal requirement is 1.6mm all the way round, but we change tyres at 2mm as we think this is safer. You can check tread depth using a tool, but your tyres may also have tread wear indicators that show you how worn they are.
