Checking tread depth and tyre pressure

Tread depth is crucial for maintaining grip on wet roads, reducing stopping distances and preventing aquaplaning. You can use a depth gauge to get an accurate measurement of the tyre tread – this is the approach we’d recommend. Or use the 20p test.

We recommend you check your tyres at least once a month and before long journeys to keep them safe and road legal. Worn tyres can significantly increase the risk of accidents.

Tyre pressures can vary by manufacturer and can be found in the vehicle handbook, on the driver’s door, or inside the fuel flap.

If you have hit a kerb or pothole please complete a more thorough check of your tyres for any cuts, bulges or other damage to the tyre or wheel.

Looking after your tyres

  1. Pressure

Try to check your tyre pressures when they’re cold at least once a month. You can do this using a pressure gauge or at a service station. The correct inflation can normally be found inside your car or van door or inside the fuel opening. If you have a tyre pressure monitoring system in your car or van and it goes off, please don’t ignore it, as underinflated tyres have reduced grip and can cause blowouts.

  2. Tread

When you check pressure, it’s worth checking tread as well. The legal requirement is 1.6mm all the way round, but we change tyres at 2mm as we think this is safer. You can check tread depth using a tool, but your tyres may also have tread wear indicators that show you how worn they are.

Run flat tyres

Run flat tyres save boot space by eliminating the need for a spare tyre or inflation kit. Your vehicle manual will state if your vehicle has run flats.

These tyres have reinforced sidewalls that prevent collapse after a puncture, allowing safe driving for about 50 miles at up to 50 mph.

Winter tyres

While we don’t offer winter tyres, we do allow for all season tyres to be fitted.

You can fit winter tyres at your expense, but you must store and protect the removed tyres, accepting liability for loss or damage. You’re also responsible for storage, refitting costs, and ensuring standard tyres are refitted before returning the vehicle to ALD Automotive.
